High-impact teaching program for K–12 schools

Teaching for Mastery is a whole-school professional learning and instructional coaching program aligned with how the brain learns best. By reducing cognitive load and making learning explicit, it supports teachers to deliver clear, consistent instruction so every student can build secure, lasting knowledge.

Teaching for Mastery

Create the conditions for deep learning in every classroom

Teaching for Mastery is a professional learning and instructional coaching program grounded in the science of learning. Teachers learn to manage cognitive load so students can focus their attention, practise successfully and retain learning in long-term memory and improve the quality and consistency of classroom instruction to increase student engagement and understanding through clear explanations, modelling and guided practice.

High-Impact Teaching Practices make an impact

Teachers will master five core practices

Explicit instruction
Teaching new content in small, clearly sequenced steps with modelling and guided practice so students can successfully move learning into long-term memory.
Retrieval practice
Strengthening learning through frequent, low-stakes opportunities for students to recall prior knowledge, improving retention and transfer over time.
Engagement and participation
Designing lessons so all students are actively thinking and responding, maximising attention and opportunities to practise new learning.
Explaining and modelling
Making thinking visible through clear explanations, worked examples and demonstrations that show students exactly what success looks like.
Checking for understanding
Regularly monitoring student learning and responding in the moment to address misconceptions and adjust instruction before gaps widen.

  • Teaching for Mastery and Classroom Management are designed to work together, but they can be implemented independently. Teaching for Mastery focuses on improving the quality and consistency of classroom instruction, while Classroom Mastery establishes the routines, expectations and behaviours that create the conditions for learning. When implemented together, schools see the greatest impact because strong instruction is reinforced by calm, predictable and well managed classrooms. That said, schools still experience significant improvements in lesson clarity, student engagement and learning outcomes from Teaching for Mastery on its own. If you would like to speak with us about how these programs can be sequenced or combined as part of a broader school improvement strategy, please contact us.

  • Yes. Teaching for Mastery is grounded in the principles of explicit instruction and the science of learning. The program supports teachers to design and deliver clear, well structured lessons that reduce cognitive load, maximise opportunities to respond and ensure all students can access new learning. Teachers are explicitly taught how to use daily review, clear modelling, guided practice, checking for understanding and purposeful practice to support student mastery. These strategies are embedded through instructional playbooks, coaching and in class demonstration so that explicit instruction becomes a shared, consistent practice across the school.

  • Real classroom impact is essential to the values of Classroom Mastery. We are unable to deliver one-off workshops and Professional Learning sessions to schools. The model of professional learning that underpins this program comprises knowledge-building, demonstration, practice and coaching and these four elements make up the structure of the Classroom Mastery program and together ensure its effectiveness.

  • Currently we only provide whole-of-school professional learning. If you are seeking support as an individual teacher,  we recommend Teach Well. The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) provides great resources for teachers.
