An Effective Behaviour Program for Schools

School-wide discipline has traditionally focused on reactive and punitive strategies like reprimands, suspensions and expulsions. But these are inadequate. Classroom Mastery focuses on positive approaches, a good classroom culture and flourishing schools. Classroom Mastery is designed to support schools to improve student wellbeing and learning. We work at the whole-school level so that you can see the benefits in every classroom, every day.

“Safe, ordered and positive learning environments are a foundation for learning” (PISA, 2019).

Get your free guide to building a positive school culture

Ready to create classroom behaviours and school culture that foster learning and engagement for all students? Our guide to building a positive school culture includes practical, research-backed tools to help you start the journey towards calm, orderly and productive classrooms.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Practical tools to help you identify your school’s current student behaviour challenges

  • Support to establish a case for change that will help you introduce a new approach to classroom management

  • Templates to help you start and track the success of your new classroom management initiatives

Start making a difference today. Order your guide:

  • Classroom Mastery is based on the science of learning, including an explicit model of teaching. If your school has already implemented PBS or an equivalent, you will be able to use elements of your existing program (e.g., a behaviour matrix) and review and strengthen these through a science of learning lens. You will not have to start from scratch, your Classroom Mastery coach will guide you through a process of evaluating your school’s behaviour procedures and policies and assist you in aligning them to create a positive culture in your school. Our clients tell us that their PBS work positions them well to implement Classroom Mastery as a natural, more comprehensive and impactful next step.

  • Classroom Mastery is not a punitive program. It prioritises the importance of meeting students’ needs to belong and experience mastery, independence and generosity. The Positive Learning Framework and Universal Needs enable staff to have professional conversations with their colleagues on engaging students in learning, rather than focusing on misbehaviour. Consequences to misbehaviour are necessary, however, and addressed as part of development of a whole-school behaviour curriculum.

  • Classroom Mastery is a Tier 1 approach and provides a scaffold for shared language and a consistent approach between classrooms. The routines provide all students with clear and consistent expectations about behaviour in every classroom. This clarity and consistency of approach supports all students, and teachers, in understanding and managing expectations. In turn, it leads to calmer and safer classroom environments that ultimately support the learning of all students, including neurodiverse students.

  • Real classroom impact is essential to the values of Classroom Mastery. We are unable to deliver one-off workshops and Professional Learning sessions to schools. The model of professional learning that underpins this program comprises knowledge-building, demonstration, practice and coaching and these four elements make up the structure of the Classroom Mastery program and together ensure its effectiveness.

  • Our theory of change is at the whole-school level and posits that the most impact will be achieved if this is implemented at the school level. If you are seeking support as an individual teacher, the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) provides great resources for teachers.
